Sunny and going up to the 40s today! (Although, currently, at a windy 28 degrees, it feels sorta chilly right now.)

We did get up to 37 yesterday, which was a pleasant surprise. I blame the lack of expected clouds and the bright, bright sun.

Yeah. It's been like that. Especially with such dry, dry air in the house (32% RH) and a couple of cats who think it's cool to wake us up at 2 AM, 4 AM, 5 AM....

Won't be so easy tomorrow

What a hard day . . . I actually had to move TWICE.

The weather guy on the radio is saying 2 to 4 inches tonight and another 3 to 5 inches tomorrow. I guess we're due. And thank goodness we aren't on the southern border of the state.

I recall back in 1966 or so we had two snow storms a week apart that each dumped 12 to 18 inches of snow in a very, very brief time frame. Why does that stick out? They happened on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve and I was responsible for clearing the sidewalks at the church at the time. And it was a corner lot. With lots of sidewalks. And a long, wide entry walk to the front doors. And the church had midnight services both nights. And there was no snow blower, just a straight handled shovel.

Then there was the 30+ inch snowstorm we got when we lived in Dover, NJ, sometime between 1973 and '76. Narrow streets with small (short) driveways. At least the mayor lived two houses down so the road got plowed early and often even if that meant the street parked cars got buried. I went to help his wife dig out figuring it would be necessary for him to get to the office. When we finished she mentioned she just had to get out to go get her hair done. She's lucky she wasn't found later in the snow bank.

Compared to that and the nearly 45 inches Baltimore and Philly have had dumped on them since Friday, 5 to 9 inches doesn't sound like much. But then I'm not as young as I used to be.

Oops!

We vote 3-1 against... ...vet visit.

And Crazy Charlie thought they meant military vets.

No birding today.
The weather has deteriorated and the forecast is more dismal. If I were to go out, I might have an icy and difficult time getting back. After a glaze of ice early this afternoon, we're supposed to be switched over to snow. Perhaps as much as 3 to 5 inches of the stuff will fall late this afternoon and through the night. Then flurries and snow showers dominate this weeks forecast. TV news out of Elmira says it's in the high 20s there. Weather.com says it's 24 degrees down on Route 6. Our thermometer says it never got below 32 overnight and it was 33 degrees when we got up. (With the winds slowly coming over the mountain from the southeast, that's easy to believe.) Cold air does, indeed, sink.

(Actually, I learned that Weather.com and Accuweather use isotherms based on a few stations and interpolate the temperatures in between. Not always an accurate method in ridge and valley country. Especially when those ridges and valleys run east-west so the hills have a sunlit side and a shady side.)

Today will, therefore, be relegated to reading, blogging, napping, hoping for the demise of the Cowboys at the hands of the Vikings, rooting for the Jets vs the Chargers and other indoor pursuits.

Time to chill

It's just a tad over 50 degrees this morning at 8:30 AM. It's supposed to get up to the mid 60s later. It rained pretty hard overnight and everything is soaking wet. They're still forecasting showers and T-storms in the area throughout the day. I know I said I could cut firewood between showers, but just getting to the damn downed trees would result in getting soaked until the brush dries a bit. Might be a good day to just hang in the cabin and do some house cleaning, reading or, like the kitteh pictured above, napping.

This cat even looks a lot like Chester...our morning wake-up call. And the clock is pretty accurate...during Daylight Savings Time. Thankfully, Chester's stomach is still on DST which means we get to sleep until quarter to seven. Let's hope he never gets set on EST 'cause then we'll have a quarter to five wake up come April.

I wonder what he does when we're gone over night?
