Birds of the Aerie

This was the first full day of having the bird feeders out. As with yesterday afternoon, the birds came in quickly and stayed active all day long. We had lots and lots of Chickadees, Goldfinches and Pine Siskins all day. A half dozen Juncoes and a similar number of Blue Jays would show up every few hours. The other species were far more limited--usually only two or three individuals--and may have only been in view for 10 or 15 minutes. In addition to those I actually saw, I heard a Piliated Woodpecker, a couple of Ravens and three or four American Crows.

I haven't actually seen a purple finch here, lots of house finches, but no purples. I DID see some Evening Grosbeaks the other day, and a total surprise totally out of his normal range: a Harris's Sparrow, a sighting that is sending the local birding community into a tizzy....

I saw your post on that Harris' Sparrow. Must have been a thrill to spot such a rarity. I had that kind of luck a couple of years ago when a banded Hoary Redpoll flew into my window. What made that interesting is that it was misidentified as a Common Redpoll 7 years earlier.

So want to see the Evening Grosbeaks come down here this year! They really light up the winter.

Well keep an eye out for the Grosbeaks, apparently they're showing up across the country this last couple weeks! I haven't seen them since, but I've been looking!
