White-breasted Nuthatch

A regular visitor to the Aerie's feeders, the White-breasted Nuthatch always looks so very, very serious in its black top hat, slate gray frock and white vest. Only when it hits the tree trunk does it exhibit a bit of a clownish behavior.

It prefers to walk down the tree's trunk head first as it stops to search for insect, spiders and their eggs. Or, given a sunflower seed, it will wedge it in a crack or crevice and hammer it open.
