Dial-up sucks!
The worst thing is that with most people now having access to some high-speed connections, EVERYBODY seems to be posting a multitude of pictures on their blogs. (Except Jimbo at Parkway Rest Stop who can't figure out how to do so on Wordpress 2.5.) The result of the two (slow dial-up and gazillions of photos) is that each visit takes forever to initially load. So long does it take that I can drink a whole cup of joe while waiting for some of them to materialize. That, of course, makes me even more impatient and sometimes leads me to abort the damn loading process in frustration. It's a self-feeding negativity loop.

Yeah, it is frustrating. I have been in some places with my lap top where all I have is the Verizon dial up and pictures just will not download. I have found that the best time is early morning..3am or so...
What used to kill me when I had dialup (about 2 years ago) was that it coincided with everyone starting to post YouTube videos, and so naturally I had to watch, because I was fascinated.
Well, I had to hit play, then hit pause, and let the red line on the bottom play out so it wouldn't start & stall every other second (like hiccups, almost).
And it took, depending on the length of the video, sometimes half an hour before the thing was ready to be watched. You don't have high speed accessibility at the Aerie?
(Second attempt--dial-up lost the first one!0
Erica, the Aerie has a high-speed wi-fi through the telephone lines and a router. Sweet, speedy connection there. YouTube plays as it opens on Firefox and Safari..not so on AOL.
I'm at the Bolt Hole in the Adirondacks and I'm not even sure the digital telephone line comes up this far on my road. (Dead ends at the Bolt Hole.) The "neighbor" a 1/4 mile down the road works for DEC and has a hook-up via a sattelite dish. either way, I'm not paying the extra $$$ for a seasonal residence.
Guy, if you think I'm getting up at 3 AM...Hell there's not that many people up this way to clog the lines. But if the birds are singing again tonight because of the full moon (they were last night at 4 AM), I just might.
Does it help the loading time for you if pictures are posted in "extended entries"?
I used to post most of my pics in extended entries just so people with dial up didn't have the wait time. Then someone told me it didn't matter... so I have a dilemma.
I may try doing thumbnails if I have that option available with my current blog software - I don't know if I can do it or not.
Yeah, slow internet is a bummer.
I still haven't figured it out, so stop on by. :-)
You can get broadband go to www.dialupsucks.net for info
