Still more college football

In the late Saturday games:

As to be expected, Idaho served it up to #1 USC on a platter. USC won 38-10. But the Vandals gained 182 yards in the first half which made the USC crowd a little nervous. This was USC’s 34th consecutive victory at home, the longest such streak in the nation.

Arkansas State (who?) made #4 Texas work for its opening day victory. They scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to shave the Longhorns margin to 21-13. Despite winning, Texas might move down in the polls.

#8 Oklahoma did indeed score sooner and quite a bit more often than visiting North Texas 79-10. The Sooners held a 49-0 lead at half time thanks to the passing! game of their red-shirted freshman quarterback, Sam Bradford. Oklahoma finished the game with 403 yards in the air AND 265 on the ground. Next week they have a slightly tougher opponent in the visiting Miami (Fla.) Hurricanes.

#13 Georgia picked up their 11 consecutive season opening victory with a 35-14 drubbing of Oklahoma State.

#18 Auburn got passed Kansas State 23-13 but it was much closer than that. KS did a lot to beat themselves with penalties and a couple of late turnovers.

#21 Arkansas powered passed Troy 46-26.

#22 Texas Christian welcomed the Baylor Bears and then whupped them 27-0.

#23 Hawaii trounced visiting Northern Colorado 63-6. Hawaii’s quarterback Colt Brennan threw for 416 yards and six touchdowns -- in the first half. Northern Colorado avoided a shutout on a QB sneak in the fourth quarter, but then had the extra point blocked and the ensuing kickoff returned 94 yards for a touchdown by Hawaii’s freshman Malcolm Lane. Aloha NC Bears.

#25 Texas A&M defeated Montana State 28-7.

-----
So, with a couple of games still scheduled for Monday, Oklahoma has the most points scored with 79 just ahead of Louisville's 73.

-----
Although there many lopsided scores, there were only three shutouts: #2 LSU over Mississippi State, 45-0; #17 PSU over Florida International, 59-0; and #22 TCU over Baylor 27-0.

-----
There were two games that went into overtime:

Colorado triumphed over Colorado State 31-28 in OT.

After jumping out to a 21-0 halftime lead against Minnesota, Bowling Green had to get a field goal in the fourth quarter of regulation to tie and then a TD and 2-point conversion in overtime to win 32-31.
