Iditarod update

The Iditarod Sled Dog race is in its ninth day and it’s shaping up to e a race between last year’s winner, Lance Mackey, and four time winner Jeff King. Mackay held a nearly six hour lead over King at the last checkpoint, Kaltag, but will undoubtedly give some of that up when he rests his dogs along the trail to Unalakleet. Mackey is still running 14 dogs while King has 16 in his team.

Unalakleet is just 261 miles from the finish line.

UPDATE: King has apparently overtaken Mackey as they head to Unalakleet. This is based upon their GPS positions.

Unfortunate news from the trail is that one of musher John Stetson's team, Zaster, has died. The seven year old male was ailing when he was left behind at one of the checkpoints but succumbed to what appears to be aspiration pneumonia.
