I spent yesterday afternoon watching the Giants and Jets take down the Cowboys and Bills. Then I watched the first half of the Colts vs Patriots. (The Colts literally kicked the Patriots to the curb as Adam Vinitari made a 52-yard field Goal in the fourth to push the struggling Colts into the lead and eventual win at 18-15.)
The Giants looked great and made me wonder how the hell they lost to Cleveland a couple of weeks back. Eli Manning sure looked in control. That group of wanna-bes they sent up from Dallas sure looked pitiful though. Now, if Washington loses tonight the Giants will have a 2 game lead at the half way point in the season.
Favre threw his obligatory interception and it went for a Bills' TD. That's the third time this season he has thrown a TD pass to the wrong team. The Jets' defense got that one back, however. And the offense did enough to seal the deal and earn the win. At 5-3, the AFC East is a logjam of Jets, Bills and Patriots. And Miami breathing down everyone's neck at 4-4.
I was writing up my posts on the college game, ranks and results while watching the pros. I have to say that the college game sure seems more exciting.
Was there a better finish than the Notre Dame vs Pittsburgh game? Four (4!) overtimes in which there were 7 field goals made.
Or Wake Forest over Duke 33-30 in OT. Or Navy over Temple 33-27 in OT. Or Miami over Virginia 24-17 in OT.
Maybe the Northwestern TD with 12 seconds to go to win by seven, 24-17. Or the Michigan State field goal--also made with 12 seconds to play--to win by one, 25-24. Or Georgia Tech beating Florida State and Missouri edging Baylor by identical 31-28 scores.
Then, of course, there was the Texas/Texas Tech finish. Texas takes the lead (33-32) for the first time with less than two minutes to go and Tech comes right back to score a TD with one tick on the clock to win 39-33.
Sure there were a lot of blowouts, but even they can be exciting. I mean, did you watch the Appalachian State/Wofford game Friday night? Sure, the final was 70-24 but...WOW! Did Appalachian State look good.
Other games of note:
North Texas' coach had the entire team tested for drugs during the week and 15 players failed the test. I thought that might go a long way to explaining their 0-8 record at the time. Well, the went out an beat Western Kentucky 51-40.
In the Big East the patsy Syracuse Orange rose up to defeat the Louisville Cardinals 28-21. Seems there might be some juice left in the Orange.
Other News:
Penn State is suffering from a game of leap frog. Alabama won so you would expect them to remain atop the polls and the BCS. And Texas lost so they went down, as expected. Penn State? They didn't play. But Texas Tech shot passed them into the #2 slot in the polls. (The AP Writer's, CBSSportsline, and BCS had it Texas Tech #2 and Penn State #3. The Harris Poll and the Coaches Poll had it reversed.) Looks like the Nittany Lions will have to run the table and hope either the Tide or the Red Raiders--or both--lose to ensure a slot in the Championship Game.
