I came across this while hunting in the woods northeast of the Bolt Hole about two weeks ago. The morning was a chilly one with the temperatures in the low to mid teens when I started out at 6:30 AM. It had warmed up a bit by the time I came across this at 10 AM but it was starting to snow a bit. See if you can figure out what has been happening here and what the white stuff is.
I'll leave the answer in the comments.

If you've ever seen hoar frost you've got an inkling of what has happened here. I've often seen spires of ice and frost blooming around the edges of mud puddles or from very wet soil along a trail, but this was so much more delicate. Small injuries on the side of this red maple had wept water in a very fine form that reminded me of glass wool. I wasn't sure it was ice until after I took these pictures and actually tried to pluck some of the white stuff off the tree only to have it melt as my fingers got near it--not touch it--just got near it. Incredibly delicate considering the same ice could make branches literally explode.
