The first half of the Rose Bowl looked like the over-hyped trash that it was. Fumbles and interceptions little scoring, questionable calls by the officials, some playground action, which, if it happened at the line of scrimmage, would be called an option, and a missed extra point—the first half had them all. Texas was leading 16-10 at the intermission.
Now, the second half…that was a different story. Like two heavy weights standing toe to toe and slugging it out, there was little finesse and lots of smash-mouth. Maybe Texas was tired of all the ESPN episodes where they tried to compare this USC team to other great teams of the past. Bush this, Leinart that, White something else. All you heard was how great these SC players were; how NFL teams were vying for the Reggie Bush Sweepstakes and how they were supposed to lose.
Vince Young ran for a total of 200 yards—and threw for another 269 yards—he was the Longhorn’s QB. His last two rushes resulted in a TD at 0:19 and then a 2-point conversion. The former moved Texas ahead by one (39-38) and the later made it a three-point spread (41-38) ensuring a field goal could only cause a tie. They didn’t need the last two points.
Thus ends the Trojans’ 34 game winning streak and their try for a third consecutive national championship.
