Sigh. It should be clear to all that the truth is the easiest story to stick to. Once you start to fabricate a story two things happen: 1) you're bound to make mistakes in the retelling and these will screw you; 2) once caught in a lie, people will have a difficult time believing anything else you say (unless you're running for Congress that is).
