Dodged the worst

It's a mere 14 degrees at the Aerie this morning and everything is coated in a glaze of ice. We missed the heavier snows that fell to the west of us and thicker ice that knocked out power over in that direction. Some areas serviced by Penn Electric won't be getting their power back until tomorrow night. (Our power comes from Tri-County REC and they seem to be a bit more responsive--or just luckier.) There don't seem to be many branches down or tree tops topped in the immediate vicinity. We did have the lights flicker a bit just after sundown last evening when the winds started to kick up but the brunt of the storm bypassed us. Even so, there won't be any running down the hill to church or to get te newspapers this morning.

Ice coats the branches
Ice coats the trees. (Click for larger version.)

With the temperature predicted to only climb into the high 20s there's not going to be a lot of melting today. Hopefully the sun will get the ice off the branches but I'm not looking for much else. There's no snow to shovel off the driveway. What little that did fall got blown away. I'll spread some salt and hope for the best.

ice on red maple buds
Some of the red maples were just starting to form leaf buds.

ice on the birch
The birch branches seem to have drooped the most, yet they haven't broken. Lots of tiny twigs and buds have ended up on the ground, however.

Everything's blue in the morning
With the sun still on the other side of the hill, everything takes on a blue hue in the morning.

The ice certainly makes for some picturesque views. But I'd rather have snow on the branches than ice, anyday. We lost our only two apple trees a few years back to an ice storm.

Of course, on the positive side, we are no longer bothered with wasps and hornets being attrated to any fallen fruit that we failed to pick up.

I was wondering in the first photo what that red stuff was.....I thought, fatalist that I am, that some animal met its Maker in those branches somehow....but duh...red maple buds...of course! I knew that. Not!
