Rain, ice, rain, and more rain. That's what the past 36 hours have produced here at the Aerie. The temperatures have yo-yoed between 28 and 41 degrees. The melt of snow during the warm periods has been prolific. I'd say we got more than 2" of rain and there may be more to come yet. We are currently sitting in the "eye" of a low pressure system as shown by the swirling clouds on the area radar.
When I looked at the radar yesterday, what I saw was a broad expanse of heavy rain from the Carolinas to Missouri all funneling up the Appalachian Mountains and passing directly over the Aerie headed on up to the Bolt Hole.
Up at the Bolt Hole there's been snow, ice and now rain. Some of the ice reports indicate there may have been close to an inch. If that's accurate, there must be lots of downed tree limbs and power outages. (A check of the National Grid web site indicates about 5000+ customers without power in two dozen widely spaced counties.) Mark made a side trip up to our cabins with a helper and managed to clear the 38" of fresh snow out of the driveways and off his roof before the rain/ice/snow hit. It's a good thing he did as the ice and rain would have been absorbed by the snow and made for one heck of a weight load on his shallow-pitched roof. Even so, he claims he had to shovel the area around his roof before he could shovel the roof. The snow was piled so high by the snow thrower used to clear his drive that he had to step down to get to his roof!
We had a power outage here at the Aerie during the night. Terry woke up around 3 AM and said the power was out (her radio alarm was dark). About an hour later the lights came on and then went out again for a few minutes before staying on. (By then I was fully awake--sorta--and made my way downstairs.)
