Danny Kaye conducts!

While looking up some of the referenced musicians on YouTube for the Peter Schickele post, I stumbled upon this clip of Danny Kaye conducting the NYC Philharmonic. Only he faces the audience so you can see what the conductor's face looks like during a performance.

Loved it!!

I was raised on Danny Kaye movies (to us, though, he was ol' Dave Kaminsky from East New York...kidding). By nine years old, I had the whole "the pellet with the poison's in the vessel with the passel, the chalice from the palace has the brew that is true" routine committed to complete memory, to the amusement of my friends, who didn't know WTF I was talking about.

I tell ya...there was genius, and then there was Danny Kaye genius. Tomorrow it'll be 21 years that he died...I still remember where I was...my fourth grade teacher, Miss Piltzin, showed me the obit section of the Times. I was all of 11 years old at the time, in the seventh grade of Mill Harbor Elementary School (it no longer exists).

I still can't get the poison pellet gag right. It's far harder than "Who's on first." Must be the tongue twisting nature of the beast.
