I was going to write something like: "Doesn't anyone play defense any more?" when I saw that SMU beat Houston 72-42 last night. After all Houston had 560 yards of offense in a losing cause and SMU had 384. Then I looked at the scoring stats.
SMU scored four touchdowns on defense. They returned three interceptions for TDs and returned a fumble recovery for another. Houston also had an interception return for a TD. (Seventy-five yards by D.J. Hayden. So they did, indeed play defense as five of the sixteen touchdowns were scored by the defenses in this high scoring contest.
Both teams are now 3-4 (2-1 in Conference USA) but they play one heck of an entertaining brand of football.
And these two teams will be playing in the Big East next year.
