Late yesterday, Lance Mackey, winner of the last three Iditarod races made a break for it. He and his team left the Kaltag checkpoint at 12:35 AK time. The next competitor to leave Kaltag was Hans Gatt at 14:45 a full 2 hours and 10 minutes later.
Mackey has reached Unalakleet first at 3:32 this morning. Being first in to Unalakleet garnered the Wells Fargo Gold Coast Award: a nice little gold cup and $2500 worth of nuggets.
Jeff King was third out of Kaltag at 15:33.
Hugh Neff fourth at 16:09.
Mitch Seavey fifth at 17:25.
(Full and current listings are here.)
There are just six more checkpoints between Unalakleet and Nome and one mandatory 8-hour rest must be made at White Mountain (75 miles from Nome) by all mushers.
