At 4:45 AM.
Mourning Doves, Robins, Chickadees, Vireos, White-throated Sparrows, Chipping Sparrows, etc. The farookin' woods were alive with the sound of music. And it ALL seemed to be right outside my window. The real problem is that I've begun to get good at identifying many of the calls. As a result I'll lay there and start a list instead of bunching the pillows over my ears and going back to sleep. So I was up and making coffee at 5 AM.
A shame too, 'cause the weather is perfect for sleeping. A nice 60 degrees F. A little overcast (looks threatening to the northwest but they're not calling for anything until late) and damp, but the temperature's perfect.
I've got to get myself down to the repair shop to ransom the brush hog, but he doesn't open until 9 AM. Hopefully the rains will hold off until late this afternoon.
With all the lakes, streams and forest up here, it's almost like Florida. Any day that starts off warm and sunny is going to get real hot and humid by three in the afternoon and there's a good chance that will spawn some thunderstorms somewhere in the area. Seldom really amounts to much and does little to reduce the humidity, but for 15 minutes when it pours (and sometimes hails)--oooh, boy does it feel good.
Back before we drilled a new well and our water was got only for flushing the toilet, we would count on the rains to fill 5-gallon buckets for dish washing. And for showers, the kids and I would strip to our undies, run outside in the very cold rain, run back to the porch and lather up, and then run back into the rain running off the roof to rinse. Hopefully before the rain stopped. We only did it a couple of times one summer. Lots of fun but cold!
Well it won't be cold this afternoon. Weather.com says it'll get up to 85+ and stray and scattered thunderstorms are the call for the next 36 hours at least.
Time to make breakfast and down another cup of coffee. (Farookin' birds!)
