Highway 37 (The Cassiar Highway) update

I'm sitting just across the Idaho/Oregon border after having spent a lovely weekend in the capital of weird with my son and his lovely wife. After traveling approximately 375 miles today across Oregon, I got curious as to what might be happening way up there in northern British Columbia/southern Yukon. Has the fire gone out? Is it under control? has it moved away from Highway 37 so that normal traffic may resume? To find the answers to these questions, I just checked the web site www.driveBC.ca to check the status of Highway 37 (also called the Cassiar Highway) from Watson Lake to Dease Lake--and the answer is NO!

As of Aug 09, 2010 02:37 PM

Highway 37 Both Directions

Closed in both directions from 160 km North of Dease Lake to the BC/Yukon Border because of Forest Fire with unpredictable fire behaviour. Temporary openings with Pilot cars MAY occur if conditions are safe, most likely between 8AM - 2PM, may be cancelled/postponed due to fire conditions. Low confidence of opening. Travellers should be prepared for long waits with adequate fuel/supplies. Alternate route is via Hwy 97, Alaska Hwy. Next update at 4:00 PM, Aug 10th (ID# 98697)

(Emphasis added.)

Un-freakin'-believable! A week and a half(?)!! (since Thursday, July 29th) and there is still no reliable movement through that stretch of road. "Temporary openings with Pilot cars MAY occur if conditions are safe, most likely between 8AM - 2PM, may be cancelled/postponed due to fire conditions."

Just thought you'd like to know that the highway between Chicken & Eagle washed out again, in several places, and was declared a disaster zone by the Governor, last week.

Not a good time to be in the Interior near the Canadian border ... on either side, apparently.

My understanding of The Top of the World (Chicken to Dawson City) was that it was closed indefinitely but certainly through the rest of this summer.

How did that go again...
