We had a new visitor at the Aerie this afternoon. Three or four Common Redpolls showed up at the feeders to take advantage of our largesse. They seemed to like our offering of sunflower seeds.
This is a small bird which usually inhabits the far north. They come south in the winter but the maps show their winter range isn’t much further south than Pennsylvania although they may not come this far every year. Weather conditions and food supply play a big role I determining how far they will migrate. We’ve had strong, cold winds out of the northwest for over a week now and the temperatures have been quite low. Snow to the north has also pushed these field feeding birds south searching for seeds.
