We seem to have dodged the bullet of some very nasty weather in the form of snow, sleet and ice here at the Aerie. As the system moved through yesterday, there was a skinny little channel of non-weather between two comma shaped bands of yuckiness. As it slid northeast over us, we were in that skinny central band. Yeah, it was windy as all get out and cold but there was little to no precipitation. We ended up with just the four inches of snow that was on the ground yesterday morning and a little drizzle early today that remained wet and not frozen as the temperatures rose above the freezing mark during the night. It's still windy and raw and overcast and the weather gurus aren't ruling out any flurries but that's about all they are forecasting--flurries.
Further north, west and east of here things appear to have been much worse. Lake effect snows are falling southeast of Erie and Ontario and when (if) it stops they could have two to three FEET of snow on the ground. The hills of the Poconos and the Adirondacks got hit pretty hard too. In the area of the Bolt Hole they're calling for 1-3 inches of snow today, 1-3 inches tonight and 1-3 inches tomorrow and more on Wednesday. Winds up there are currently 30-40 mph and are going to continue in that vein until tomorrow when they "drop" to 20-30 mph. At least the temperatures are to be in the upper 20s to low 30s and not the single digits you can expect in late January and February.
I like snow but, damn, it's too early for it to fall in quantity.
UPDATE: 10:30 AM One-and-a-half hours have past since I posted the above and all I can say is I should have kept my mouth shut! The temperatures has dropped below freezing, and the winds continue to howl. Add snow to the mix and you've got a freakin' blizzard raging outside at the moment. This is nuts! When I wrote the above post, the sun was about to break through the clouds and I could see blue sky in the northwest. *sigh* Too early for the Glenlivet so I guess it will be another cup of coffee.
Less than the time it takes to warm up a big mug of coffee and--abracadabra, presto chango--the snow has stopped and the sun burst through the clouds--for a moment. It's going to be one of those days.
