Schiano turns down Michigan football job
Good news for Rutgers football and Rutgers in general. Coach Schiano has built a mini dynasty on the banks of the old Raritan. He no doubt would have done well at Michigan but it’s a stretch from his New Jersey roots.
A New Jersey native, Schiano orchestrated one of the most impressive turnarounds in college football during his seven seasons at Rutgers. When he took over in Piscataway, N.J., the program was one of the worst in the Division I-A.
The Scarlet Knights have enjoyed three straight winning seasons and will be making their third consecutive postseason appearance at the International Bowl against Ball State on Jan. 6. They went 7-5 this season, a disappointment after starting the season ranked No. 16 in the nation.
It’s not the first time he’s been approached by another school and it won’t be the last. Here’s hoping he realizes just how important his continued success at Rutgers is to both the school and the Big East. Rutgers has made it known just how much it appreciates what he has been doing and the class he brings to the program.
Schiano turned down a chance to return to Miami last year. He was the Hurricanes defensive coordinator before coming to Rutgers. After pulling out of contention for the Miami job, Schiano signed a four-year extension through 2016 that will pay him $1.7 million annually.
What most college teams need is character and stability in the head coaching position. With Coach Schiano at the helm, Rutgers has both.
At least we won’t have to send Tony Soprano and company to convince him to stay at RU.
