More on This Date In History

December 7, 1787

Delaware became the first state to ratify the new Constitution of the United States of America. Please note that this was six years after the Revolutionary War ended.

December 7, 1805

Lewis and Clark and the men under their command began the construction of Fort Clatsop on the southern shore of the Columbia River near where modern Portland, Oregon is located. The Corps of Discovery would spend the winter on the Pacific coast before heading back east on March 23, 1806.
