According to this article in Tuesday’s Star Ledger the bear hunt in New Jersey was ticking along smoothly Monday. There were 54 bear reported at check stations by 2:45 in the afternoon with several hours of shooting light (and probably many more hours of dragging) remaining. Fish and Wildlife staff said they expected to be in line with the 123 bears killed on opening day in 2003. Big bears mentioned in the report include a 725 pounder (606 pounds when gutted) and a 525 pounder (gutted weight).
[Someone called the butcher wile I was there yesterday dropping off my deer and asked about their doing a bear. He had a 350 pound animal he had tagged.]
The article mentions that there were 2000 fewer permits issued this year than there were in 2003 without mentioning the fact that the hunt was cancelled at the last minute by the Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner, Badley Campbell, and the State Supreme Court in 2004. This has created distrust in many of the state’s hunters and led them not to seek permits this year. Permits are free but you have to take a state course where they discuss hunting bear (shot placement to dealing with protesters).
